“A world without emotions would be like a world without colour or a world without sound, a 2-dimensional planet”

, Emotions

There are 9 primary emotions

Anger, Sadness, Surprise, Fear, Distress, Disgust, Guilt, Shame, Interest

(there are variations on these)

We are generally all born capable of experiencing these emotions

All other emotions are secondary emotions which we learn throughout life, these are typically a combination of primary emotions

And yet they cause us so many problems, it is almost as if the human race is in it’s infancy when it comes to dealing with emotions, or maybe it’s the reverse, our environment has changed so much that we are struggling to evolve and change with it.

The news is good, we are learning and developing safe and effective ways to release and manage emotions, including Emotional Freedom Technique, Matrix Reimprinting, Neural Linguistic Programming and Mindfulness Techniques.

Emotions are a concoction of hormones, our brain signals our body to release these hormones or emotions in response to triggers; thought, memories, visual events, aural events, tastes, different textures, real and imaginary.

It is our interpretation of these triggers that activates the release of our emotions and how we react.

Emotions are essential to survival.  They are neither good or bad, right or wrong, they are simply our brain and body responding with the information it has in its best attempt to keep us alive.

And our body is geared up to respond to these signals, it is when we are not able to, or don’t feel safe to react and process these emotions that we run into problems.

Blocked, suppressed or unexpressed emotions can wreak havoc in all areas of our lives. From physical to mental health, to learning and coping ability, to phobias and eating disorders, to explosiveness and ‘over-reactions’ to being stuck, anxious and depressed, clouded and distorted thinking and more.

Barb was awesome to work with. She helped me break things down and think about my situation in smaller bits. She listened to what I had to say and worked at my pace. Even when more things popped up for me, she helped me get through them. She always had suggestions for whatever popped up for me.
